FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Five pilots have reported seeing green lasers while flying over New York and New Jersey.
The Federal Aviation Administration says it happened to four planes between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday over Long Island, about four miles northwest of Farmingdale. CBS New York reports that another incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Thursday near Sandy Hook, New Jersey.
The FAA alerted state police. No injuries were reported.
Lasers can distract or temporarily blind pilots. Pointing one at a plane is a federal crime.
New York Sen. Chuck Schumer says the use of green laser pointers is on the rise and they should be banned. Schumer says they’re brighter and potentially more dangerous to the eye than red lasers.
